Bladder cancer is cancer that occurs in the tissues of the urinary bladder which is an organ that stores the urine till it is removed from the body. This type of cancer usually affects older men as compared to women although it is more common in the bladder, the same type of cancer can occur in other parts of the urinary tract system as well.

What are the common signs and symptoms of bladder cancer?

Many people with bladder cancer have blood in their urine but no pain while urinating. Some of the other factors that indicate bladder cancer are fatigue, weight loss, bone tenderness, frequent urination, urgent urination, urinary incontinence, pain in the lower back and pain in the abdominal area.

Cancer in the bladder cells can develop when the cells grow and divide abnormally where there are mutations which cause them to grow out of control and not die at all. These abnormal cells together can form a tumor. There are three types of bladder cancer – i) urothelial carcinoma which occurs in the cells that line the inside of the bladder ii) squamous cell carcinoma that are caused due to chronic irritation of the bladder like and infection or long term use of a catheter iii) adenocarcinoma -these begin in the cells that make the mucus secreting glands in the bladder.

Some of the common causes of bladder cancer are:

  1. Exposure to chemicals
  2. Smoking and tobacco use
  3. past radiation exposure
  4. parasitic infections
  5.  chronic irritation of the lining of the bladder

A few common risk factors that can increase the chances of bladder cancer are eating a high fat diet, having a family history of bladder cancer, low fluid consumption ,chronic bladder infections and being over the age of 55.

Turmeric can prove to be beneficial while treating bladder cancer. The incidences of bladder cancer  are increasing so rapidly and the major approach for treating early-stage bladder cancer is surgical intervention via the urinary tract which is combined with intra bladder chemotherapy or immunotherapy but this has its own share of side-effects like inflammation, fever, prostatitis

One of the common household spices that have been proved to be effective in treating and controlling bladder cancer is turmeric. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and its scientific name is Curcuma longa. The health benefits of turmeric are due to the presence of curcumin which has anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antioxidant properties.

Since turmeric is a great antioxidant agent, it scavengers off all the free radicals from the body. These free radicals are found to be one of the major causes of cancer in the body.

Inflammation is a normal process in the body which is caused during an infection or an injury. This process helps the body in healing but excess of inflammation can lead to diseases like cancer. Since curcumin has good anti inflammatory properties ,it can reduce the excess of  inflammation taking place in the body and thus prevent the occurrence of cancer.

Antitumor activity of curcumin is also very well known. Curcumin is found to control the division of the cells to large extent and prevent the process of tumor formation which in turn can lead to cancer.  Turmeric is also found to be involved in prevention of invasion and metastasis of cancer cells in other parts of the body.

If a person is being treated for bladder cancer, he or she can also be given turmeric as it helps their body to sustain the side effects of chemotherapy in a better way.

It is also seen that turmeric is a great immunomodulatory agent which helps the body to have a better immune system that can help to fight of the cancer cells leading to bladder cancer.

Some of the steps which can be taken to prevent the risk of bladder cancer are not smoking. Research has found that the harmful chemicals from smoking cigarettes and cigars accumulate in the urine. When one smokes their body processes the chemicals in the smoke and excrete some of them in the urine.

The harmful chemicals in this process can damage the lining of the bladder which can increase the risk of bladder cancer. Including a rich variety of fruits and vegetables in the diet may also help reduce the risk of bladder cancer.
